Colombia: Tourism numbers spike as Narcos fans arrive to offer help taking down Medellin, Cali cartels
BOGATA – Tourism to Colombia, especially from the United States, has dramatically increased in 2016 and 2017 as fans of the Netflix show Narcos have arrived to offer themselves as resources in the hunt to bring down Pablo Escobar and the Medellin and Cali cartels, a new report from Colombia’s tourism board said.
“Though the Cali and Medellin cartels have long ceased to exist and FARC gave up its arms earlier this year, the number one reason tourists say they visit is to get a taste of the cartels and help the DEA in its case,” Maria Moreno, Colombia tourism spokeswoman said. “Americans especially are arriving in record numbers.”
“Tourists seem to be in denial – as though we in the government are simply hiding the gratuitous violence due to corruption,” Moreno said. “We are proud to say that despite tourists’ false assumptions, Colombia is one of the safest travel destinations around.”
